Hampton Happenings ~ September 2024
Hampton Families,
Our 2024-2025 school year is off to a great start! Our young scholars are busy working on literacy and math skills. During August, we hosted our in-person Open House for each grade level, and we enjoyed meeting everyone. September has been a busy month as our teachers have been working with your child to determine their academic needs. We are halfway through the first quarter of the school year! At the end of the first quarter, your child’s teacher will set up a parent/teacher conference to discuss your child’s progress and skills they are learning this year. Our PTA board has been busy scheduling events for the year. One event is our fall picture day! We will have our fall picture day on Thursday, October 3rd —please mark your calendar for this special day. As we continue to ensure the safety of all our students and staff, we ask for your assistance in a few areas. If you drive onto campus, park, and then walk to pick up your child please park in the visitor (front) parking lot. If you use our car rider line, please have your student enter and exit on the right side of your vehicle. If your child requires assistance getting in and out of the car, please park and walk them to and from the building. If you are a walker parent, please use the crosswalk to enter and exit campus. Our staff parking lot (back parking lot) is often completely full as we have a large staff. Please see the arrival and dismissal flow of traffic map below for your reference. We are looking forward to an amazing year at Hampton with your child and family. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher, or contact the front office at (910) 861-7100.

Gello from your School Nurse,
What a great start to this school year we have had. This month we want to focus on reminding our students about the importance of good hand hygiene. Did you know that 80% of diseases are transmitted by touch? 1 in 4 of students will miss school days this school year due to gastrointestinal or respiratory illnesses that could have been prevented just by washing their hands effectively.
We want to teach our children that they should wash their hands:
- Before eating
- After using the restroom
- After blowing their nose
*Not only is it important to teach them when to wash their hands but how to wash their hands. They must rub their hands together for 20 seconds for handwashing to be effective.
Annual Flu Vaccine Reminder:
DoDEA requires all students to get the annual influenza vaccine. You MUST provide proof of vaccine to your school nurse.
Flu Vaccine Deadline: December 1, 2024

Welcome to the Counselors' Corner! We have two counselors here at Hampton Primary School ~ Sherry Shortt and Mary Kelly Smith. We are here to support all of our wonderful students and their families. School counselors work in partnership with teachers and parents to help students achieve school success. Some of the things we do at Hampton include classroom guidance lessons, individual counseling, and consultation. We also plan some of our special events like Red Ribbon Week and Month of the Military Child. If we can assist you or your child, please feel free to contact us. We are looking forward to a great year!
We love reading here at Hampton! Students visit the library every week with their class and have the opportunity to check out two books to bring home to read. Please help your child return their books each week. You can refer to the chart below to see what day your child comes to the library.
In addition to reading your student’s books with them at home, you can help them learn to take care of their library books. This is a great opportunity to teach your student responsibility. Return books to your student’s backpack each night after reading to make sure they stay safe…and don’t forget to separate water bottles from library books!
First grade students have been learning the difference between fiction and nonfiction books. We have also been using nonfiction books to learn more about how living things grow and change. We have learned about the life cycle of the apple and the pumpkin.
Kindergarten students have been learning about the parts of a book and the job of the author and illustrator. We also have been learning about characters and settings in stories.
Greetings from the Art Room!
In September, students created name art! Kindergarten students explored making the letters of their name using a variety of art-making materials. They rotated through centers that included play doh, painting, Lego, stencils, collage and even used pattern blocks to create their names. These centers also introduced the students to materials and processes we will be using throughout the school year.
First Graders explored the watercolor resist technique as they created their name art. First, they used oil pastels to create a grid that contained the letters of their name. Then they painted over the letters with watercolors. We talked about using contrasting colors so that their letters would stand out. As they were painting, students were so excited to see the oil pastels “push away,” or resist, the paint!
